What is Giving Tuesday?
“Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.” – From their website 2020. Learn More
The West Virginia Farmers Market Association has three goals for this giving season.
First – Raise $65,000 to support FARMacy programs in West Virginia. This funding will help us provide technical assistance to five farmers markets and help them feed 125 West Virginia families.
Second – Facilitate ongoing partnerships between healthcare providers and farmers markets within five communities. Our communities need our support now more than ever to build strong healthy families. The best way we know to help is to provide them with support through healthcare providers.
Third – Build relationships between citizens and farmers who nourish our communities. Our partners in nutrition education are on stand-by to offer demonstrations on how to prepare nutrient dense dishes and family friendly recipes using locally sourced ingredients. Our farmers are ready to grow!
This program costs approximately $10,000 per farmers market (5 is the goal for 2021) at a bare minimum of $50,000 to support 25 families for a single twenty week program. With this funding, an incentive program will be established to support the participating producers and encourage participants to make mindful choices about their health, wellness, and nutrition. The remaining $15,000 will be used to support the WVFMA staff, farmers market managers, and FARMacy coordinators on the ground to work with healthcare providers and develop ongoing partnerships for community wellness. If additional funding is secured, it will be used to provide equipment and support additional families in need.
